Start a conversation

Every connection on SOTRU has a dedicated encrypted channel. Here's how to open one and what you can do inside it.

Open a conversation

1

Find your contact

Either go to Contacts in the left sidebar and click on the contact you want to message or directly click on the contact's name within the Contact page.

2

Start typing

The message input is at the bottom of the channel. Type your message and press Enter or click Send. The message is encrypted before it leaves your device.

What you can do in a conversation

From within a conversation channel you can:

  • Send messages — text messages, formatted with basic markdown
  • Share credentials — send a verifiable credential from your wallet directly in the conversation
  • Send files — attach documents from your device or your SOTRU document storage
  • View the Trust Vault — the panel on the right shows your contact's verified credentials that have been received (or yours that have been shared)

Message history

Your conversation history is stored in your encrypted vault. When you log in on a new device, your message history syncs after you unlock your vault. Messages are not stored on SOTRU's servers in readable form.

Note

Your messages are encrypted in transit and at rest. Access to conversation content is controlled by your vault key — messages are not exposed to third parties.

Verifying your connection

Once you're chatting, you'll likely want to verify your contact's identity. The Verify button in the bottom-right corner of every chat lets you request or share verified credentials — a Business ID, Bank Account credential, or any other credential in your wallet. See Verify your connections for the full walkthrough.
